Great advice here Jason...

I have a Trident 15 you could borrow and try out whenever you want. I love it but would personally go for a Trident 13 cuz the 15 is pretty big and heavy to move around by myself and for the paddling/diving I do the 13 would be plenty good.

Best of luck!

Sincerely,

Jim

Just came across a worlderness system Tarpon 120 on CL for not much more any info on this one? I know the brand is awesome just dont know much about making a good choice when buying. Sorry to be a pain and thanks for the replies...

I've got two T120s they are good yaks but these would be the cons I've expirienced with it on salt.

Tracking isn't the best when dealing with wind and swell, rudder helps but not as much as I would like it too.

The other thing I've noticed is the hull design forces the yak to ride up and over wind wake instead chop through it, and can get bumpy. If you don't have a problem with sea sickness this won't bother you though. Never dove off it so I can't say anything about that.

Besides those I love the T120 and use it all the time, it was also my first yak, got one 8 years agon and still use it all the time.

If you could wait long enough to find a good deal and are keen on Wilderness Systems then I would suggest the T140, but if you've got the madness that could be hard to do.

another thing to think about is the pelicans are thermoformed, not rotomolded. by blow molding these boats in china in mass quantities they are able to sell them at low prices. I don't think they are "cheap junk" but I agree that you get what you pay for. I don't have any experience paddling these so this is just my .02.

The FND is wide @ 36" - not a problem if paddling short distance from the launch to your honeyhole. Besides, you'll spend more time diving rather than paddling to your spot. However, if your paddling long distances and exploring new areas, paddling a wide yak after a long dive can be tiresome.  I've got a T13 with a rodpod that I THINK is ideal.  If used, probably not much difference than the Pelican new.  Your welcome to test mine if u like.

Jason, I see that you are from Santa Rosa. April 7th at Spring Lake REI will have its annual paddle day. There will all kinds of kayak to try out and paddle. I will be there with the Ocean Kayak rep. Starts at 9am till 1pm It is a great event. I would also like to say that if you buy, please buy from a local dealer so your money suports our local economy. REI- Santa Rosa, Clavey Paddlesports in Petaluma and Wind Toys in Santa Rosa support NCKA events and are all based in Sonoma County.

Thanks everyone. Such a wealth of knowledge here and I think Im at the point where I can make an educated buy at this point. All of my questions have been answered. I think I will stick with Name brands such as the Ocean yak or the worlderness system! I will be looking around and still may go for the Cobra fnd or the pelican. Ive found great deals all around and I do plan on keeping my money local. Ive been a part of NCUH since the begining and now because of them ive found my way here. I appreciate all the help esp. being a rookie paddler. My exact need is to get to my honey holes and to explore more of the coastline we all love and find new untouched areas to bag some big Abs and do some scouting. Thanks again fellas  :smt004

I have looked at Pelicans, can't say I was ever impressed by them.  I noticed a lot of rough edges which , for me, was a turn off to it.
