Saturday morning I had planned to paddle to the end of berkeley piers ruins for strips and butts.  When I arrived there the water and wind were foul. :smt012  So, after failing to make bait, I hooked up with Nate(bungle) and headed to paradise cay to try to find smooth conditions.

Sure enough, the water was glassy but in all our attempts to make bait we ended up with zilch!!! :smt011   We trolled all the way down to paradise pier and then back to the cay where we exited the water and decided to call it a day.

The next morning I picked Nate up early and we headed to OP to meet up with phishin pat.  We arrived to dead calm waters and sunshine at 700 am.   :headbang:  I  purchased some shiners from Mike at the baitshop, every one of them vibrant and excited to get out in the water. :smt005  We paddled out to the top of the income and drifted south east away from the pier, out in about 20 feet of water I got my first takedown, it bounced three times fast and I grabbed the rod from the holder, slack line and then nothing? :smt009  When I reeled up my line my shiner was gone.  It was a clean getaway.

So, then, the hightide was very still and lasted about 30 to 40 minutes with no water movement, I drift trolled towards the swirl for no more hits,  soon after the tide started to move I hooked back up with nate and pat left.  we drifted past the pier in 20 feet of water and drifted and drifted, we started to near the channel markers for the sierra point marina in about 14 feet of water and I had my second take down, 'cept this one stuck, line was peeling and my yak was straightening itself out, I set the hook and started getting dragged.  At first I thought bat ray but it was giving headshakes and swimming all over the place, it wasn't a heavy fish either.  After being pulled for 50 or 60 feet it swam underneath me, as i pulled up on the fish, it shot forward and snapped my leader. :smt010  Damnit Jim!  Lost 'em!

Tis all good though, I'm really pumped up for the derby now.  Chatted with Mike a little also and he is really lookin forward to this weekends derby also.  JTF..

Sounds like the fishing is really picking up out there. Sorry to hear about the missed fish but glad to hear you got some action.

Way to go, mang. Thanks for the report. Hopefully somebody catches something at the tourney.

Good to hear that we got Pat out on a kayak!

Now no fish is safe!
