In our travels to fishing destinations we come across and pass by lots of roadside fruit stands.  Last week on the way back to the East Bay from Mendocino County, Hamachijohn and I stopped at Gowans Oak Tree apple stand on Highway 128 in Philo.  They had a bunch of different varieties of apples and most were .60 per pound.  They also had apple sauce and some pears as well as pumpkins and seasonal squashes.  I asked the girl and they have apples year round.  Anyone know a good spot to get cheap fruit?  If you have a favorite fruit stand post it up!

A fantastic recipe!!

Here's one of mine:

"Machado's Fruit Stand"

Ingredients:
Vehicle
Money

Steps:

  • With vehicle, procede through the scenic burg of Auburn California on Interstate 80
  • Exit at Bowman Rd. exit
  • Head northwest at end of offramp.
  • Turn right on to Bowman Rd at stop sign
  • Turn left on to Apple Ln, after approximately  1/4 mi.
  • Enter Machado's parking lot on left almost immediately
  • With money, enter Machado's establishment proper
  • When available, consume Apple Cider, and pie of your choice.

Machado's is much lower in cheeeze than the similar Ikeda's recipe, found about 1/2 mi SW on Lincoln way.

Enjoy!!

Those apples she had us sample were delicious-think they were called pink lady or something. Had to buy some after a little taste- what a good saleswoman!
I now plan on stopping by such stands more often-especially now that I purchased a dehydrator. Learned a lot from the talk on the drive home btw

I hit the pedrick rd. stand in Dixion every time I head to the salt to get my camp veggies.
After I hunt Yolo I hit the one at the chiles rd. for chips, guac and a cold beer!

Soak your fruit in pine apple juice helps preserve them when dehydrating
