I use mine this way to carry two boats on top and gear in the bed.

Ya thats what i was gonna do to for transport then when all unloaded flip it an stick it in the bed for easier unloading at the water

I also made a couple wooden shims to wedge in between the upright and the crosspiece to keep it quiet.
