Hey SandBag, not sure how old that Penn 60 longbeach is or what condition its in but you may want to check or replace those drag washers.
Last year I build a poor man's downrigger with the same reel and while trolling at Berry the drag let loose, sending 3lbs of weight to the bottom of the lake. Let me tell you what...it's no fun hand lining 3lbs of weight with 60lb powerpro line. My hands were so cut up, I was a bloody mess.
I have since replaced the drag washer and everthing works fine.
Justa warning :smt003

you might try an old Jigmaster, or a 155, both have decent size spools.

How do you guys plan to mount the downrigger rod? I have a Prowler 13 with the Scotty mount above the front cup holder. I recently picked up the Scotty extension with about 8" of steel pipe. I figured a Scotty rail mount to a simple rocket launcher style rod holder mounted off the extension would work and line the rod and downrigger up nicely. Either that or get the triple mount? I've thought of putting the downrigger iin the rod tube behind the seat but seems the line coming down from the rod would bee in the way of the paddle stroke.
And you could hear me screaming a mile away as I was headed out for the door....

I was thinking about that as I built it, almost replaced a few things but the reel is over 25 years old( dads old salmon reel) and I do think it's worthit. I haven't used it much but already had problems with the spool tensioner, if I don't crank it down really tight it will back off when I'm letting down line, so if I don have my hand on the spool when I stop it, it just keeps going. I don't expect it to last very long but can see what you mean about handlining lead on braid, first time that happens it's trashed and I'll find a newer reel. I'm not to concerned about losing the weight, my dads got a five gallon bucket full of salmon weights but I wouldn't want to leave a bunch of braid on the bottom of the lake.

Nice! Now I know what to do with my old rods and reels.
