Any reason you guys aren't just taking a capture from a video?

Run your GoPro in 720p@60fps and I'm sure you can get a couple of nice frame grabs.

Really?  I thought this was brought up once beffore and was a no-no...

I take two pictures. One with my hand holding the fish. And then I very slowly let go, get my hand out of the way, and take the second picture. That way if the fish jumps out and I lose it at least I've got the first shot.
+1 basically  :smt002  I do a few shots holding her gently down, then do a second serries of shots after I let go.  Then I use the trough to lower the fish back into the water.

Video is nothing more than a series of stills ... at a fast frame rate.  So what's the difference between taking video and using one of the stills from it, and clicking a camera as fast as you can and taking a still from it?

As long as the picture is clear and adheres to the rules for an eligible fish, there should be no problems.

And therein lies the problem with taking video. The only way you can know whether the images you just captured are clear enough is to either review them on a larger screen than these cameras have or to freeze and zoom in on those images to see whether they are clear or not. Now I know on my camera I can not zoom in on video stills 'in camera' and that the screen is not big enough to tell whether what I''m looking at on my 2.7" screen is adequate.

When taking stills if I have any doubt as to whether the image is good it only takes one second to zoom in on the image to verify that it's clear. Also proof that video isn't the best way to get a clear image are the shots that have been previously posted to AOTY. They are very blurry in comparison to still photos. I recommend taking still images/photographs as that's what has been working for the vast majority of people to date.
