Does anyone have any secret weapons for killing sun burn, :help:

The dumbass white boy that I am I decided to take advantage of the good weather and I went to Del Valle yesterday for some quick trout and a good paddle, here was the prob I wore shorts and a t-shirt and now I'm paying for it. I guess I haven't sat in the sun in that position before so the sun baked my shins all day and now I can hardly walk, I know there are some good remedies out there.

Please no rashing for not wearing sun block I made a mistake and I feel the pain anyway.
Thanks James

Happened to me on first day in Jamacia too. The hotels spa had a 'sunburn treatment' which consisted of nothing more than a cool shower first,  then an application of Aloe Gel, the same stuff we have here, but real thick. (the plain stuff without any extra creams or conditioners)  The way it was applied did the trick. Get help and have them apply a generous amount on the the burn area, then cover with a plastic food wrap like Saran Wrap.  Stay still, and allow it to 'absorb' the longer the better I think, but their timer was for 20min. They advised not to shower for at least four hours.  Man it felt great ! ! ! since I had worn sandels my feet has a burn pattern that was the most difficult to endure, but the rest was great, It allowed me to sleep, and continue on for the evening.  I returned after 24hrs for a re-treatment.  The key was wrapping it up and allowing to absorb into the effected area.    Hope this helps

James:

Don't beat your self up, even us browner folks can get FRIED.  I had a friend email us a photo of me and my daughter on a baja trip and the file was named "burntdad.jpg"...ooooch.

I have had great success with Bullfrogs new alchol based gel suncreen.  It works great, and doesnt make your hands  greasy, which can impede paddling.  Wear a good hat, good eye protection, and light, quick dry fabrics as well.

Once the damage is done, its a matter of healing, and learning from the experience.  Aloe etc., works well.

Put some aloe gel in the fridge for an hour or so before applying it. It won't speed up the healing process, but it feels so good.
A nice cool soak in cold water before helps too. After about 4 hours of the gel, use a skin moisturizer, then more gel.
It seems after I get fried like that the more beer I drink the less I feel the burn too. I have offered my services to several medical institutions for furthur study on this subject. I have yet to hear a reply.

Well Lobster boy-

If you are just sitting around the house and not going out or anything. Try Noxema for the pain. Just smear it on somewhat thick. Leave it on for a bit and wash it off with cold water. It works pretty good. After that, plain old aloe gel and time. Lesson learned...

James,
You have some great recommendations here. Let me work on the prevention side. I am an whiteboy that goes from pastey white to bright red to pasty white. When flyfishing, I am out on the river from sun up to sundown. The best think I have found is the lightweight long sleeve shirts that are made of the quick drying material. I also wear the pants. I use the ones by Columbia. They really do a great job of keeping the sun off (also ticks and poison oak). When you get hot, you just get yourself a quick dunk and it keeps you cool without giving you a major case of crotch rot. If you are currently wearing cotton shirts, you will definitely find these long sleeve versions cooler. While I wouldn't wear them in the ocean as I have my wetsuit on, I do use them on freshwater lakes when wearing waders.

Skin cancer is a biatch....do whatever you can to prevent it. I say give these type products a shot.
Good Luck,
Marc Mc

Some good advice on here..   I use Mentholatum and coat the shat out of whatever part is burnt.  And drink plenty of water!! .   I use plenty of Vitamin E oil after the first day.  Day 2 much better , Day 3 about back to normal.
fishing is an addiction that never goes away
