Other than being slow, the drifter is a fine boat.  I'm more than happy with mine.  It isn't great in the surf, though the newer ones have a smaller cockpit and that might help on that count.  If you're mainly going to fish within a couple miles of the launch a drifter is fine.  I only find myself wishing for a faster boat when paddling out to the sturgeon or salmon grounds.  Once there, I'm very happy to be in a boat that is more stable than the other guys once I'm actually trolling or anchored up (speed doesn't matter for either of those).

Consider also I bought a used 3hp motor for $180.  I could spend $9 for numbers on the drifter, hang the motor off a Ghetto(tm) outrigger and outperform a $900 kayak easilly as long as surf wasn't inolved, like in san pablo bay or moss landing - which are the only places I've felt disadvantaged anyway.
The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down
Of the big lake they call Gitche Gumee
Superior, they said, never gives up her dead
When the gales of November come early.

The drifter is a very stable yak, (got to test one today) I honestly would love to own a drifter, but my thoughts might change after this weekend, well have to see! See you guys this weekend!
