I am rigging my new kayak (it's also my first) and want a crate for the well behind the seat.  I bought one from Office Max and it seems really flimsy.  Anyone know of a good source for sturdy crates preferably in black?  If I can find a better one soon, I won't bother attaching things to this one.

Also, what is the preferred method of sealing around the wires of a Fishfinder where they go through the deck?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Where are you located? I have an extra I will give you.

As far as fishfinders go I think most people are using wire seals to go through the deck and keep things dry.

Check out the Container Store. There is one in Corte Madera and Walnut Creek. They have a variety of colors.

Lucky for me, my wife works near one in SF.  They are quite sturdy and fit nicely in the back of my tarpon 120. I even mount a rod holder on to it.

As for the fishfinder...do a search in the forums for "wire seals" and check out the iris-style solution from West Marine. They work very well.

Good luck.

I am in San Jose but maybe we can find a way to meetup someplace soon if you don't find another source.

Definately just get one from behind a store.
There are TONS behind any Safeway or Albertons.

That way you can pick exactly what you want.

Look out for angry recieving clerks...

West's in S.C. had a bunch of crates for sale.  Since I have been sucessfully using the flimsy Office Max crate I didn't ck the price (I put two  O.M. crates together end-to-end, sawing out the ends, to make one long one. Those crates are tougher than they look, and are light and flexible -  they take a beating. I use thin plastic gutter downspout for rodholders, too. ).

Just a hint, offer a couple of bucks when you ask for a crate. Better karma.
