I bought a Humminbird Matrix 17 Fishfinder less then a year ago and it has already failed.  :smt013  The problem is that the connection of the power chord and monitor became corroded, and the little copper post (or whatever that phallic looking metal thing is called)  completely disintegrated. Anyone else having this problem, or know of a solution? It seems that maybe its not a waterpoof connection. Maybe I just need to keep a plastic bag over the monitor.

Dielectric grease will cure all your problems. Once you get the cable replace lube it up and you should be good to go.

I use the huminbird as well and had the same problem, also I use the portable model that you oload up with AA batteries.

both the power pin plug in and the battery case have given me problems.

Best practice for me is to use the automotive electronic cleaner spray (like 2$ at OSH for a huge can)

when I come in, before I even rinse my reeels, I now pull the plugs and open the battery case and spray the cleaner, drench it.  When the stuff dries, I put a v. thin layer of that dialectric grease on the female side of the power plug and plug things back up.

As long as I'm good about this maintenance, things are ok.

(except the plastic on the cases cracking, but that's another story)

Ditto on the dielectric grease.  I have used a M17 many times witthout issue, bummer to hear about yours.  If you send it to Humminbird they will in all likelhood be able to fix it.

When ever I install any FF I first spray all the connections male and female with Fluid Film.

It's a rust and corrosion preventive for quick and effective corrosion control. It's environmentally
friendly and Made in NorCal. This stuff works great.

Dielectric grease is the ticket. I just replaced my power cable Saturday do to the same problem. You can buy a new power cable at West marine.

By the way, the West Marine in Oakland houses their "outlet store," and you can pick up electronics and other goodies at a deep discount.

I recently bought a Matrix 25 there for $117.  They carry spare cables as well, but it's hit or miss whether they'll have what you need at any given moment.

If you have the time to poke around, though, you can find some great deals.  A week or so ago, they had Piranha 10s for $49 (which may be more than a Piranha is worth, but you get the point.)   :smt003
