I need a speargun for Halibut diving.  Mainly it needs to be short-ish with lots of power and penetration.  Most of my shots are well under 10' away.  Any suggestions?  Also, if someone has a used gun for sale PM me!

- I use an AB Biller 32 special, but it has very little power, range, and penetration.  There are lots of fish NOT in my freezer because of that stupid gun...

The gun you speak of is one of the deadliest ever!....Just go to the dive shop and get smaller bands for it.... :smt002

or thicker bands, you can get the rubber at the sac freedive shop web site and or Neptonics systems, you will have to re-use your wish bones from your old bands and just re tie them with a doule contrictor knot here is a link on how to tie

We all freedive for them.  I think the guys I dive with consider anything else cheating or not very sporting.  I just find it cheaper ;)

Thanks guys.  I think I'll go with the thicker/smaller bands and see how it goes.  I also want an additional gun, maybe pneumatic like Mares or Omer, and I found a gun from a maker called Marc Valentin that seems decent and affordable.  I'm picking up my new boat (hypalon 12.5' zodiac style) on Friday so I'll go out sometime soon and try out the new bands.  Thanks again all!  -=Brian=-

Does it have that big funky screw on double flipper? Those things have a big footprint, probably need alot of band power to get it through a fish. I'm thinking that plus your 10 foot shots might be contributing to the reduced penetration power.

Just got a new AB Biller 36 Special Mahogany for my birthday last weekend!  Brought it out friday and shot two 15+ pound Halibut with it, and it performed flawlessly!  I figured out what the problem was with the other biller as well.  It had a burr on the shaft near the trigger catch, as well as the ring that holds it in place at the muzzle of the gun.  I filed off the burr, steel wooled and oiled the shaft, and now I think its ready for action again.  Thanks for all the suggestions everyone!
