I have this 6600 abu reel that would lose its drag when rockfish fishing.
I changed the drag washers with the new carbontex.  Everything works fine at home when tested and when I get home, but in the water it's loose.  This is what gets me perplexed! :smt011  I know It didn't touch water at the fort this weekend but the first drop of the jig it acted again.
Could it be the cold temperature, Moisture in the air or is it just crap and I should just buy a real reel! :smt003

I also have the 6500 and no problem with it.

I use shimano reel grease on all my drags, you want it to be tacky all around. It solves alot of drag issues unless you put it on to thin or to thick.

Also after I rebuild a reel I progressively tighten the drag and pull line until I can't tighten any more, then back it off all the way and do it again, it helps to set everything.

I coated the carbontex with the smooooth recommended grease after I assembled it back 3 weeks ago.  Failed at RBC but as soon as I got home from RBC it's tight as a clam without me doing anything to it.  works just fine now.  I think it's possesed! :smt013

just curious,
Are you using braided line?
If so ... did you anchor it to the spool with elec. tape?
Many times we get customers complaining of drag problems on new reels only to find they didn't properly anchor the braid to the spool.
When the braid gets wet it simply spins on the spool, than when it dries it seems to hold again ... sounds like a possability.
Hope this helps,
Good luck.

You can use mono backing as an anchor or the electrical tape.

ding ding....happened to a bass reel of mine. I had to splash water on the line so it would swell and grip the spool. I know a bit counter to what Eric said...but I bet thats the prob. Now I take a few wraps of thin mono as a backer and and tension as I wind on the braid

Sound feasible to me.  You mentioned that you didn't get the reel wet, but it failed at RBC so you used on the water then?  Maybe the wet line reeled in supplied enough water to soak through and lube up the spool?
