Leash all of it. I use the leash on the rod all the time , even when fishing. Its just become natural now. Leash the paddle when you are fishing and paddling is my way. I only unleash it when Im landing or launching in the surf for safety reasons. A full spare is a great idea.

I leash just about everything of any value. But I unleash the rod in my hands, then on my last trip the last ling I caught kicked it overboard, Trevala/Avet, in that split second decision making we all do I grabbed the rod, and when it was all done the fish was still in my lap. So I thanked him with a wack in the head.

I'm also pretty cheap so I make my own leashes out of brass or SS snaps and parachute cord, cheap, effective lightweight, and I get to decide how long they are.
