seaguar 25 pound leader material is $.50 a yard.  But if I get their invizx fluoro on a 200 yard spool, the cost is $.15 a yard.

so my questions are:

is there any difference between the leader material, the premier leader material and the invizx material?  Seabass are too few and far between to cheap out on the line, but then again, saving a buck never hurt anyone.

The difference as I understand it is that leader material is a bit stiffer and stronger over a shorter section of line (more shock resistant in short sections vs the shock resistance of a longer main line).

These reasons are what I've gleaned from talking to shop owners and line manufacturers' websites, who clearly have a financial stake in the answer. I've yet to see these claims actually independently tested by anyone. IMHO, there's not enough difference to justify the price difference. I typically use Maxima 100% Flourocarbon in the 250 yd spools to create my leaders, but Maxima only makes up to 20lb test. The few times I've wanted 25lb or 30lb I've bought leader material.

What Jay said plus.....I have both Seguar 25lb leader and some mainline in the 200yd spool and after the small leader spool is empty I'll be using the excess from the 200yd spool for halibut. The 'leader' 25lb might be a little stiffer but for the price I don't care. For C-bass I got a leader spool of 40lb. Not going to risk losing one of those on anything less lb. jim

Agree with Jay and Jim. The leader is also more abrasion resistant but harder to tie knots so I think the choice depends on the species and tactics. For pelagics and a short leader I would use the leader. For flylining for stripers or sea bass, I would use a long top shot of invis x. I will be switching to invis x for flylining squid later this year. For halibut and salmon, either would work. For rockfish, I would use copolymer.

In regards specifically to Seaguar, I believe there is also a diameter difference between the Premier and Invizx lines with the Premier being the thinner and more supple of the two. The extra suppleness helps with knot tying.

Last year I was using Torray Black Water leaders but since trying the Premier have moved to this leader. I only target halibut, salmon or white sea bass and justify the price by the catch. If I was targeting only rockfish, then maybe I'd use the Invizx.

I ordered a mix of 15 packs of 25# and 30# Premier and was able to reduce the cost a little by buying bulk. If you like the Invizx shoot me a pm and I'll drop the remainder of the bulk spool I have in the mail to you.

thanks guys.  I have been using the seaguar premier for WSB because I was going with 30 and 40 pound.  But recently some have been going lighter and that brought up the question.  For rockfish I just use 30 pound maxima mono and have never had issues.

Dean, thanks for the offer, but I am set.
