Will be launching from Howe around 5:30 to drift some minnows for stripers. I have been fishing from the shore and seen a enough there to keep going back, however my top water and swim-baits don't seem to be working hence the live bait. The bite in that area usually cuts off after 10 or so won't be out too long after that. I will be hitting up Broadway for some jumbo minnows in the early AM.

I did about two hours of strictly paddling both sides of that section last night as it was my first time there.  I usually fish the Watt to Howe section.  I've only seen it from the walk across at Sac State.  Pretty flat and canal like through there.  The pump station is about the only real standout structure wise.  A few 20' channels cut in about half way between the pump and the walk way on the south side was the other.  There are a few downed trees along the north side towards the walk over.  The rest of it was pretty barren and with water clarity easily visible drifting through.  Lots of fishing pressure as well especially with the boat launch right there.  We were fishing for Salmon so a couple anchored up by the pump house and a couple trolled around.  No action.  After the sun went down and right at total darkness, the splashes started hitting.  A few decent size cannon balls around us.  I think you have picked the perfect technique for the area.  I bet anything over ten pounds has had a few hundred lures and gobs of cut bait stuck in front of their noses.  If they have survived that long as a local its because they have figured out to not eat when the sun is up as well as plastics are what bags are made out of.  Drifting minnows or drifting weightless sardine strips would be my guess.  If I wasn't so single minded on catching Salmon I think your technique is what I would be employing before sunrise and right at darkness.

We also met the Park Ranger at the launch when we got back (in total darkness) and he's one of us, a NCKA member.  "16 Foot Mahogany" or something like that is his handle.  I remember him posting a lot of hookups in the fresh water lakes a few months ago when I first joined the site.  Nice guy and liked that we were out and about.  He also might be going over to the Fish and Game side as well.  It's good to have a connection for our stretch of the water.

Hope you hooked up.  No love for Salmon in Clarksburg on the Sac River this morning.
