Okay so I was surfing around youtube for yak maintenance and cleaning.. and I ran into this...

Do any of you guys do this to your yak(s) or just simple wash and dry? I mean wd-40 (as mentioned in the below comments of the clip) is a hazmat and of course that's not the way we went to go since our yaks go on the water, I was just curious as to what you guys do or what you guys use to keep your yaks cleaned and maintained.  I use the soapy wash and dry technique.

Hmmm my first thought was what a way to make your yak more attractive to fish. Like the Land lord. Think I'll stick to something else my self.

Really .............really ..........!!!!

Not sure if this is really recommended for plastic, But, I remember a old girlfriend cleaning my old dirt bike and wiping everything down with WD-40 (and I do mean everything) not only did it make it hard to stay on the seat but, the plastic fenders and the vinyl on the seat cracked a few months later. Maybe it was the cheap foreign materials but I never again allowed her to wash the bike :smt005

soap and water ...   I sometimes use goof off for a really stubborn stain.     Nothing makes it shine like a wipe down of Armor All.

WD...  Now THAT  seems really odd.    Except maybe to try and reduce corrosion around some of the aluminum rivets possibly?

Fish oil?? Really??
And I thought dry rot only happened to wood.
I can see plastic drying out and becomming brittle, but rotting?

WD-40's formula is a trade secret. The product is not patented to avoid completely disclosing its ingredients.[2] [3]WD-40's main ingredients, according to U.S. Material Safety Data Sheet information, are:

50% Stoddard solvent (i.e., mineral spirits: primarily hexane, somewhat similar to kerosene)
25% Liquefied petroleum gas (presumably as a propellant; carbon dioxide is now used instead to reduce WD-40's considerable flammability)
15+% Mineral oil (light lubricating oil)
10-% Inert ingredients
The German version of the mandatory EU safety sheet lists the following safety-relevant ingredients:

60–80% Heavy Naphtha (petroleum product), hydrogen treated
1–5% Carbon dioxide
It further lists flammability and effects to the human skin when repeatedly exposed to WD-40 as risks when using WD-40. Nitrile rubber gloves and safety glasses should be used. Water is unsuitable for extinguishing burning WD-40.

There is a popular urban legend that the key ingredient in WD-40 is fish oil.[4] However, the WD-40 web site states that it is a petroleum based product.

Soap and water, a pressure washer or drill and toilet brush. Works great.

I clean with water and a towel (no soap). I store my kayaks in a garage so the only time the sun is beating on them is when I am using them. Armor All and WD40 can make the plastic shine, but it also makes it slippery, smelly, and an attractant to more dirt. Not to mention the chemicals it can get into the water, besides I am positive fish are attracted to the smell of WD40.  :smt044 The only thing I have considered using is 303 Aerospace for the UV protection.

Love the towlet brush and drill!!!
I use water only, unless it's nasty. Then I'll use soap and water. Mine too are stored it the garage, upside down and with the hatches open.

I've just been rinsing with water and towel dry then store in the garage. I've had no issues so far. The mirage drive gets rinsed then WD40 each ocean trips.
