Read this in the Monterey Herold today,

Fishing line, hooks hurting pelicans in Monterey Bay

MONTEREY -- Monterey County's SPCA Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Center is asking the public for assistance and vigilance after treating 32 brown pelicans found injured by fishing line or hooks in Monterey Bay since Aug. 6..."Some of the birds probably were snagged while they're swimming. Others might have been trying to steal the fish off somebody's hook."

I keep a small water gun to my side so when I see their Bettie little eyes start looking at my bait, I shoot them in the face w/ it. It keeps them safe from tangling with my line/hook and doesn't do any real damage to them.  I've been fortunate enough to not have a sea lion push me off my yak while trying to steal my stringer of fish, but i'm assuming it is just a matter of time.  :smt010 Just curious what others do to keep them away?

Quietly paddle right next to your Buddy's kayak and dump a few chovies in his tankwell and then casually paddle away.

I've never had a problem except when the live bait comes in and flylining a dine or a squid is the preferred method to hook fish. Quick attention to the bait kinda works but I still had a gull take off on me this spring, with my hook and a bit of leader. it sucked. I put an egg sinker on to pull the bait under. I didn't have any more probs with birds, but i did not catch any fish either.

My wood shampoo has a yellow handle. That way I can easily see it floating in the water after I throw it at whatever is pestering me.

Interesting thread.  I've never had any featherbags come close to me on the yak, but furbags, yes.  I usually slap the the water with the flat side of my paddle and they usually relocate.  But airsoft???? heheh... nice.

I don't intend on winning any tourney's, I intend on fishing with the brother's OTW and having a good time while at it... NCKA!
