Every have one of those trips that was not meant to be?  :smt013 Our Bandon, OR 2011 is all but a dream now. Our Family vacation horse camping (and of course I get to bring the yaks) fell apart. Long story short. Sold Chevy Sub that had 180K on Craigs list two months. This was the car we pulled the horse trailer long distances (brake controller and trans cooler). Sold it because we got a buyer and we only pull long distances once in a blue moon. Fast forward on this story. I replaced the Sub with a 4Runner with a V6. The 4Runner pulls my small ski boat and yak trailer with no problems and the horse trailer locally. So... I called ten different U-Hauls to rent a pick-up (no one else rents to tow)...why? each gave me different stories (site-based management I suppose). Started with the Redding U-Haul where the asst. manager said they did not have a pick-up (funny I drive by the spot and see one everyday...called other u-hauls they said only certain u-hauls have them... last phone call a guy in the Sacramento Regional U-Haul Office said, they have one in Redding that will pull the horse trailer with the horses. Called the Redding U-Haul and one of the other clerks said ... no we do not have one... But this time I am thinking..."really" so while I was picking up my 4Runner (probably will never do business with them again....can you see where this is going? ) I ask another clerk (who should be the asst. manager) who hears the whole story and has good problem solving skills to help me. He says, "sure we can rent you that truck out front for a week (I already knew this!) and at a commerical rate (what a guy). .. let's make a reservation...I do....but I will have to have them install the brake controller...I am thinking great... cheaper than buying a truck...I call today to set up the appt. to have the brake controller install...the original asst. manager says... you guess it... can't do. By now everyone has rearranged their work schedules amd we are screwed. Thank you Asst Manager at U-Haul in Redding... you should be sweeping the floors and the clerks who have problem solving skills should be manager. Think this story may be heard in by the manager who comes back in a couple weeks?...you bet...Thank you for leading us down the road and then figuring out you can't install a simple... Believe she just did not want to waste her time...great customer service... Karma will bite back one day.... so in the mean while all our best laid plans were dragged along by U-Haul saying yes and at last minute said no...then yes... then after we were beyond the going back with $ and time off... the say no... :smt013

Thank you for letting me get that off my chest... only vacation I will get this year with the fam. Wife says go somewhere with the boys in the yaks ...(she recoginized I spent over 8 hours on the phone trying to make this happen... and now she just wants to escape leave the horses behind and let us go fishing...

Any recommendations? :smt006

At this point, any place where the water is salty would probably work for you, Sorry about the rental thing, we just went thru about the same experience to get the boat to Tahoe...
Ocean Cove or Salt Point might work for you, good luck!

I've tried lining up rental trucks to haul equipment trailers at my work and it's a royal PITA.  Best luck has been w/ United Rentals, they have a few rigs w/ tow packages at good rates.

For the trip I'd start w/ Trinidad and start working your way south, fish two days there then head down to Shelter Cove for a couple of days.  Good luck, and good onya for getting out of this heat!
