Any thoughts on the Cobra Marine MR HH90 ??   This would be my first Marine Radio.  I found one for about $54.00.  It has a switchable output for 1/2 or 2 watt.  I really don't know much about what I'm buying but a handheld marine radio like this seems to be one of the more important pieces of recommended safety gear.   :smt004

I don't know a lot about Cobra radios but I have been using a Standard Horizon for the past 3 years and haven't had a single problem with it.  Standard Horizon radios seem to get the highest marks from most of the posts I have read.  A radio isn't a place I would want to let the price be the determining factor.  When you need it, it needs to work and work well!  That price just seems a little too good.  I think you can get a good radio for around $100 but not much less.

You need 5 or 6 watts
Group IQ is inversely proportional to the size of the group.

I picked one of those up and am very impressed with it.  That said, I think a 5 watt unit for a bit more money may be a better way to go since they're pretty affordable at this point.  I had very good use from a Uniden that I picked up about 5 years back for around $125...  until I killed it.
