Live and learn:

Long time ago, I wrote about hurting my arm yaking. You guys did a great job of explaining that I'd used an improper paddling technique. Well, I finally went to the doctor: no money, no insurance. Doc says it looks like I got a stress break at the elbow. ha.
Lesson: Go out with someone experienced. Learn how to fasten a seat so it doesn't fall and force ya to paddle into a strong headwind from your backside. To self, "Learn how to paddle dumby :smt011."
No worries; I've been out 4 times since then, arm huts like a mother, but I'm too sick to stop. Thank god the weather has been bad. ha.

Oh, took my first Necky ride last week. My god those are slippery suckers in the water, especially when there's wind white caps crashing from all sides. It was fun, but lost a rod,,,had it tucked under my leg, but when a set of waves hit me, my ass came up and I think I got a hit, cause the rod shot off. Drag was loose; I'd been bouncing around for a while, maybe the line twisted around the top.
Some day I'll learn: hopefully. Hopefully I'll still have a rod to fish with and at least one arm to paddle with. ha. I'll be the guy going in circles; if ya ever see me, please give me a push toward open water.

I'd be out today if the weather would stop kicking out this wind. If they're gonna cast my arm up when I can afford it, then I figure I better get out as much as possible. Plus, the rod was my late brother's, so, I gotta at least make an effort to dredge it up from the depths; million to one, but gotta try. He'd be/he is laughing his ass off in heaven, knowing I've built a multi-gaff rig to drag the bottom with and that I'm gonna waste fishing time to catch his rod.

Dragging this crazy gaff system seems a little dangerous though. Seems it'd be pretty easy to hook onto something and have the yak flip. Right? I built the "hooks" out of coat hangers, so they'd bend out pretty easy; I'm not trying to raise a tank, just a rod. Any thoughts?

I see a Hobie in your future  :smt003  Good luck with your "dragging".  I saw Vallejo Dave "rescued" another yakker rod in the bay before so it can be done if you know the general location of the sunken rod.

SF, yup, me too. Hands free is my future; it looks like. At least the rods will have to fly out of my hand.
Yea, I got a good idea where it is, but the necky that I'm now using/borrowing is sooo darn slippery in the water, I'm a little worried about dragging my contraption and it sticking on something and flipping my sorry but. I can't even imagine trying to climb back in it with only one and a half arms, at best. Oh well, if nothing else: Never a dull moment for the mentally challenged. :smt003

Not sure if you had post a hookup so you can at least have a buddy to fish with.
My WAF is completely empty at the moment. Used it all up from GSV. :smt005
Anyhow, glad to keep you company the next time you go out. Sorry to hear about
the broken and lost rod. Good luck with everything.

Thanks Jed; anytime you're free and want to fish, I'm down. If this wind ever lets up, I'd still love to do some rock fishing from a yak or try to get a but to the boat. I lost a couple from a shore spot, about a week ago. I'm still trying to figure out how to consistantly land those strange fish that don't fight until they're on shore.  :smt013 God they're dumb fish, but what they lack for brains, they sure make up for in table fare.

I had a Hobie paddle tip break right off on me in the middle of Berryessa.  I like to mix it up w/ peddling.  But wow I didn't know you could break a bone by paddling incorrectly!

X-ray says it ain't broke! Might be a small hairline, but, like I figured, it's tendons, too much rock climbing in my youth.
Bottom line is: I never stopped paddling when I could borrow a yak. I'm slowing down, and often, the yak is going left.

Although it hurts to paddle, I do see/feel the "IT" factor in paddling. But, as much as this new adventure is getting deeper and deeper into me, I'm still a sick fisherman at heart. I want my hands free. Missing a single hit can really piss me off, having to sit there and watch the hit while I set the paddle down, only to miss it....Oh not pretty inside my head.
