Depends on the waders.  The neoprene ones I have used.  Like a loose wetsuit.  Years ago when I still hunted ducks, I ended up in a deep ditch at Grizzley Island.  Wearing boot foot waders.  Not neoprene.  Thought the ditch was shallow, wrong assumption.  I had a belt on to keep water out, worked pretty well.  But was still a real B%^&?CH  trying to swim the 10' to shore.  I would not kayak in standard waders.  I use a surfing wetsuit with a polar rashguard top.  (Like a 1.5 mil suit for warmth.)  sure a dry suit would be nice, but I do not think I would need it that much.  When I go to San Diego, I use a spring suit for both kayak and boobie boarding.  I would have liked a dry suit at GS5 and I would have stayed out longer, but after only catching ling cod, even in a group catching nothing but Greenling, I being cold, I went in early.  If I had put a sweat shirt, under the paddle jacket, or even used my 7 mil diving top, I would have been ok.  But I am still not going to take a swim in regular waders if I can avoid it.  Especially booted waders.

Advise for anyone new getting into this sport it is not the safest way to fish stick to the sport boats for that. We all take risk. If out in some o the remote areas that we kayak there is no radio contact or way to call for help so no matter what your wearing out there your going to get cold and could die from hypothermia. Every angler is there own captain and that is why I enjoy this sport so much. I change what I wear pretty often you dont want to know what I was wearing last time out up north from me... :smt005 :smt005 :smt005

If a new guy asked what should I wear i would say there are many options How big our your balls...

Some guys are compfy in wetsuit only, some feel compfy in waders, some like to be in board shorts. ive kayaked in all of them.

I have been in the water in really really crappy weather in waders and will say that you if worn properly that not much water gets in I was in the water with them on for 30+ min and when took them off looked like i pissed and crapped my pants heck I might of actually.

Hope every stays safe out there and remember that a PFD and VHF and always paddling with a buddy is what will save you not what your wearing.
If you are out in the ocean and have No PFD, No VHF, No Buddy then you might as well be naked.

The absolutley worst thing you could wear on the ocean is hooded cotton sweatshirt. No insulation whatsoever and heavy as the dickens.
