Launched in the dark and headed to the turning basin trolling lots of stuff with my boy. Nada. Headed to Cemex dock aka crappie row. Wind started blowing with the sunrise, and made drifting medium minnows really tough in between the pilings. (I have written permission to be there, before some dock nazi replies it is a no fish zone)
Cody got a huge takedown on his light tackle rod, line is peeling off, and I knew he had a big kitty! Caught a lot of big cats there over the years with Gabe on medium minnows going for crappie.
Cody gets it to the yak after his best sleigh ride to date, and fouls it with the net, and the biggest catfish he has ever hooked into, is gone. If you look close at the pic, you can see a tear on his cheek! Lol.
We picked up a few shaker stripers on our way back. Saw a couple salmon roll by the locks, lots of people tossing spinners but didnt see any hooked up. Too early I think for salmon there.

Thanks for the report. Been watching for the action to pick up here. I like fishing it at night.

Thanks for the report.  Too bad about the catfish.  I was out there the day before and ended the day with 5 bass to 12 inches.  Saw a nice boil some gulls were working but no love there.  You're correct in being a little early but you never know.

Nice to hear. Glad there is action there. I suck. When I'm there, I end up just dragging diaper stripers while trolling and don't even know it's there till I reel in my line to check the bait. I would love to experience being towed a little. Wouldn't even matter if I netted.

Where do you launch when you go up there? I ride my diatribe right down the street and it'd be nice to make a whole day of it after I'm tired of playing in the sand. Also what time of year do the stripers run up through there?

Thank you

Classic shot Rich, the "it was right there" photo :smt009. Those are the bites that keeps you going back for more. The FreshKATs TOC event is going to be awesome there, you just never know what you'll hook into. Find any crappie?

We didn't. The wind was howling and it was hard to drift the minnows into where we needed them to be. Cody has been hounding me about getting a fish finder for his yak, I have some old hummingbirds, but I told him last night I would talk to you about the Lowrance models, and get him outfitted. Def would have helped in finding crappie, we went to the Delta that night to my spot that always has them for no joy. Caught TONS of fish, just no crappie. He caught a huge golden shiner, probably 12" I was not sure what it was. Kasie looked at it and ID'd it for us. Kinda nice fishing with a fisheries biologist!

The port is finnicky, I have had some blow up days there, followed by days of paddling. Usually Dec-Jan the stripers are red hot, but I usually catch at least a few shakers, and trolling a rapala near shore will get you a bunch of bass. Medium minnows on a high/low is how I fish for crappie, and almost always catch a few kitties when I fish that way too.
