I'm a new in kayak fishing and have done 3 ocean kayak fishing so far.  It is time to take the next baby step: equip a VHF radio

There are some affordable radio on Amazon and I landed on this guy: Uniden Atlantis 250G (http://www.amazon.com/Uniden-Atlantis-Marine-Radio-White/dp/B000MGRUIM)

One problem is that I don't know anything about VHF radio, do you guys think this will do the job for ocean kayak fishing?

I don't have this model but from the specs, it'll do the job for us kayakers fine.  Maybe others will chime in...

DONT GET IT!! Its only JIS 4 waterproof rated. A kayak vhf should be minimum JIS 7. Uniden has iffy waterproofing as it is imo.

Thanks for your recommendation, I did not take JIS rating into consideration.

I'll look into Standard Horizon HX750S radio set.

I use the HX750s for over a year now and still love it.

I got the standard horizon hx851.. pricey, but it is because I use the GPS all the time to mark dive spots, fish, crab locations.

I had the same model when I first started with this madness. The radio feel in the water and that was that.
It never came back to life and even after the company giving me a new battery for it, it worked one time and
soon died again. Not a good model bro. Spend a little more money for something much better.

I purchased the Uniden Atlantis 250 back in 2006 for my powerboat, and have been using it for kayak fishing since 2008.  In fact, I haven't used anything else but that one.

Sure it is only rated at JIS 4, but mine has been dunked and yardsale'd several times in both salt and fresh water.
The only issue it has is the outside is starting to corrode under the finish.
In the beginning I put dielectric grease on all the exposed electrical points, charge jack, and antenna threads.  This may have helped out in it's survival.  Still works great.

It's by no means the best, or even the worst, but it is cheap and works.  And if it gets you a VHF now, and out fishing I say go for it.  You can always upgrade it later.
One way to waterproof it better would be to put it in a VHF dry pouch.

Now, on the flip side, I decided to finally upgrade now that I had some cash to kill.  Upgraded to the Standard Horizon 851X with GPS and DSC.  Just received it from the Brown truck a week ago.  Haven't used it on the water yet, but it seams to be a solid unit with some great features beyond just being a VHF radio.

I have an Atlantis 250 and it has been fantastic. It's been out several times and at one point I knocked it out of my kayak and didn't realize I was towing it. (It's on a lanyard) It was probably in the water for a good 20 minutes, still works fine 0 issues.

If you can afford a nicer one, go for it. I can barely afford my tackle so Low end is usually what I aim for.
