It's almost the Monday the 13th  :smt003. . . This is my first time fishing for Rockfish in well, many, many moons. . . and from a kayak! Well, needless to say to all of you guys, I'm pretty pumped about it as I'm sure you are too. Anyway, recently I dug up some of my Dad's old rockfish Bugeye molds. I remember using these lead heads, along with a rubber grub body and catching quite a few fish. Of course, this was back in the day when you could probably catch a fish using anything short of turd on a hook. I'm sure you've all heard the stories about fish practically jumping in the boat. From what I'm hearing, sadly, the "boat jumping fish" are pretty hard to come by nowadays.  :smt010 So anyway, I have these molds, but have no idea what color jig body is most effective, so I thought I would ask you guys what you thought? And of course, if anyone would like to try out the bugeye mold, I'd be happy to share as long as you BYOL (bring your own lead).  :smt006  Any tips would be appreciated - Pete

As far as the smelting goes, best heat source i've used has been a turkey fryer, preheat your ladle and mold directly in the flame or with a torch, respirators, face shield and double up the welding gloves, flux lead with a candle and skim often, make a couple test pours with no wire form or jig hook and leave it in for a couple minutes so it heats the mold internally, if you're getting half filled jigs then either the mold or the ladle is cold and wrecking your flow.

Color......personal preference. I think at depth its less about color and more about shades of gray and silohuete. I keep unpainted, red, blue and white on hand and try to use what best matches the body color. You got pics of the jig, sounds cool, never heard of a bugeye.

Hey,
I could be wrong here, but the bugeye lead that I used to throw were for stripers,  mostly. They certainly could've been used for rockfish; they're tanks and would get down. They used to be in red, yellow and white, with matching hair and sometimes rubber tails.
