Hello all,
I hope everyone is doing well and slaying them in whatever body of water you are in.  My sister is in town for a couple of days and she had to go to PG today.  Then the little light bulb above my mouth and below my hair went off.   Sooooooo a sis, how bout catching a ride down to otter cove, ill pick up some dinner and pay for gas.  she agreed and we were off.  I got in the water about 7 and the water was murky.  didnt help that the sun wasnt out.  I stayed out for 1.5 hours and only saw a few smaller fish.  But i was looking for lings.  At one point I peaked my head  up and saw some pretty good breakers rolling through the entrance and thought, oh crap what if it gets worse and I have to body surf through the shallow rocks.  ahhh whatever.  I cruised around for a little bit more and finally found a ling...... that wasnt even close to being big enough. but it was really beautiful.  So im getting tired and its close to noon so I just decide to shoot a couple of fish.  The first fish i shot was bobbing on the stringer when i come up with the second fish and see my board in a pool of thrashing water.  My first thought, was damnit a shark is eating my fish and then its going to eat me, but i quickly came to my senses and realized that a shark needs to eat way more than a little fish. i got close and it was a seal.  what a hooker.  so i had a head and some guts left thanks to the fat lazy seal and i came home with only one fish.  No pics so this all didnt happen and I did not stop by phils fish market for lunch and it did  not warm my soul.

Nice report and write up, as always, Darrel. For the seal problem I recommend putting a mesh game bag or bungies on your board so you can tuck your fish. To prevent them from drying out, just cover them with kelp and give them a splash occasionally.

Also, for better vis at OC, try going to the left. I've found that there's generally less particles suspended in that area.

Sorry to hear about the lazy seal  robbed your dinner.  Thanks for the imaginary (never happened) report Darrel.

Mothaf&$ing furbags!!!!!  :smt013

That sucks bro...least you got out there and got in safe and sound though....

Careful if you put fish on top of the board over there...those seafulls have stolen meat from me before as well!!!

For me the best cure against the hazy water over there is a high tide....also makes those shallows way nicer...

No pics: didn't happen!

Similarly frustrating and anti-harvestful, a freeloader type bird pecked away at one of my ripest strawberries today.  I feel your pain, HP.  Be glad at least that you helped to feed one of nature's creatures (F'ing P'sOS!).   :smt002

Way to get in the water and hunt despite the conditions! At least you found a ling, regardless of size.

cheers,

Geoff

Glad to hear that you got some time in the water Darrel. Sorry to hear that the hooker took off with one of your fish.

Speaking of hookers, there are strippers (eh, I mean stripers) cruising through the surf zones of Monterey Bay. I heard that it's real cool to swim with the those schools, even would be cool to shoot one ;)

Thanks for the report my brother, hope you enjoy your memorial weekend!! :D

That would be cool to swim with stripers. I've heard that they are camoflauged very well under water when they school, and that they just kind of blend in with each other.

Just make sure that you don't shoot any. Stripers, like salmon and sturgeon, are illegal to spear.

Rick, thanks for that info my brother!! I've only been fortunate to see a school of stripers once, but that was from above water on Monterey's fisherman's wharf. Pretty awesome scene, and must be even sweeter to watch em underwater :)

Darell, forget what I said bout shooting em, just swim with em and shoot a couple halis instead lol!! :D

It should also be noted that its not a good idea to spear strippers either....they too are best enjoyed by viewing them from afar.

I disagree, I've "speared" a couple strippers in my time and it was quite lovely.  Just be sure to bring your "game bag" to put your "spear" in and your good to go!  :ky:

game bags are essential when spearing strippers.  Nobody likes sand crabs.  and speaking of stripers.  maybe big jim can get in to a school and wrastle one with his "BEAR" hands like he does everything else.  I think a gun is to easy for you jim.  time for you to even the odds with the creatures of the deep.
