I need to get some wind and water protection for my trip to Russian Gulch in a few weeks.  I'm in a mostly enclosed canoe, not a sit on top so wont be constantly getting splashed or lapped with water but want to be sure I can make it back to shore if I get dumped over. Here are my ideas on attire, let me know what you think:

1) REI NRS 3mm spring suit as my base. I can bring a fleece top and shell along in case it's too cold in the open air or gets windy.

2) Oneil 1.5mm top and either splash pants or separate neoprene pants

3) a thin farmer john style suit, basically same as NRS above but full legs

I don't plan to do winter kayaking at this point or get very far from shore so I'm mostly concerned with being comfortable in the boat and having enough cold water protection to get back to shore in an emergency. Any thoughts on these options?

Winter or summer, the water temp doesn't change a whole lot.....still cold enough to kill you.  Of those options I think the farmer john would offer the best compromise between safety and comfort.

Yeah I was thinking more of the environmental changes than water temp... potential for more chop and swell in the winter, rain, colder air temps etc.

I think you're right about the farmer johns but I keep thinking about how I might use the spring suit or even a top and bottom combo for other beach and river trips where I would probably not use the FJs.

I gotcha.........but the rule is and always has been, to dress for immersion.  Better safe than sorry.
