My friend from work is heading to Maui next month and was wondering if there were any decent opportunities for some shore fishing. I stayed in Kihei when I was there, and I don’t remember there being many beaches that looked very good for fishing. Most of the ones where I stayed were fairly shallow for quite a ways out….and real choppy.

Anyway, thanks for any advice.

I've wondered the same thing.  My last trip over I even took a rod/reel/tackle, but never even took it out of my pack.  Too busy snorkeling and checking out the scenery!  :smt002

Dustin have him check out these books I have the first one if he wants to borrow it. I was at Napali 5 yrs ago and caught a few reef fish off the beach using a popper with a stip bait trailer but then the swell picked up and got nothing the rest of the trip.

Have your friend get in touch with the people at AQUAHUNTERS, I'm sure they can give great advise.

I once commando-ed a trip for myself out of Kalopoly... woke up early, grabbed the renta car and my 4 piece set up, cast masters and headed north... difficult to find shore access and finally found a idyllic cove, with no trespassing signs...

went anyway and pushed my luck on some reefs with crashing waves, got few good cast and some hits that would not stick and then the adventure started....

I look back at where I parked my car and there is this beat up pick up next to it with a a guy in the driver seat looking at me.....  :smt087

I figure I'd better check this out... I walk back through this grove of beautiful tall trees above me to find this white guy still just staring at me and fiddling with something in his lap....

" Buy some buds Bra?..."  Thinking and paranoid he could be a cop I say " Uh No thank you ... " and as I get closer I see that he has buds drying on the dash and the whole passenger compartment is loaded with bud flowing everywhere, including down to the floor boards and his seat......  :smt103

" Well. I guess your not a cop.... "  " uh, no way Bra... Here... "   I'm hanging with him and ask him about fishing here and he says I'm lucking that I'm not roasting over a fire like a stuck pig for tresspassing over this land...

he then lets some tribal yell and these native howls come back to him... there is all these guys living up in the trees I just passed under... I go with him and climb up to where these guys are...

what a trip... they where taking bets among themselves on weather I was going to get swept out to sea... started partying with them and what kool experience... wound up buying a neckless from one of the guys and came back to our giant rental house in Kalopoly with way too many buds...
my brother in law and I where soon busted by our wives, but hey...

we did not care....   :smoke :smoke

i don't know if that will help at all, but tell him to keep his options open...   :smt003

A couple years ago we stayed in Kihei for a week, found that some of the locals would bait fish on the bottom at night off the rocky points south of town. I never saw any fish (caught) but was told some of the bigger fish come into shallower water near shore at night. There are places along the Maui shoreline that I probably wouldn't go at night, some locals tend to get territorial (who can blame them?).

Two buddies and I half circumnavigated one of the islands in 2004.  We spent 4 of the most interesting days of my life there.
We met some of the wildest, jungle dwelling, outcast farmers.  These cats had a whole society set up back there.
They were really cool to us because we traded warm Coor's lights for amazing island products.  They can make their own wine and goat cheese but beer was like gold to them.  Luckily we saddled down the kayaks with 4 cases and were invited to many a drum circle at night.  The women were pretty, topless and wore sarongs. They were the first to great us one evening when we paddle in half dead, scared and pissed off at eachother for bringing too much stuff.  It all worked out and we fished poppers for jacks when the surf was down.
There was another element to the group that were older, bearded like pirates and carried machates.  They stayed away from us but always watched our every move.
Crazy times.  :smt001

In kihei out in front of the hale kamaole (probably butchered the spelling) there is a small rocky cove to the east of the beach. Fished at night with an old local dude who told me that my set up was all wrong. He was using live bait on a slider if i remember right. I was using dead fish chunks I bought at the market. I didnt catch anything, but has one of the most exciting 10 second hookups ever. Snapped 40lb p-line like it was nothing. Probably a ray.
