Hi Folks - I have been searching for clothing for giong out on the yak since I got burned last time I wore swim shorts on a nice day.  I hate being hot, I mean really hate it, and as you know the water temp on the FW lakes gets up over 60 degrees into late spring and up higher over the summer.  Some of the lakes people swim in in basic swim gear.  What is the recommended attire for day long outings on the water on lakes big and small, both were shoreline is close and where it is not.  Is it advised to go for a short version of the farmer johns or is it better to go paddle pants and jacket?  I really again, like to be cool, I grew up in a cool climate.  However, if I go for a drink in the water, I want to be sure I am safe temp wise and flotation wise.

Many thanks.

Jacket and pants might be alright in the am but come lunchtime in 80+ you're gonna be roasting.  I go rash guard or any kind of longsleeve synthetic moisture wicking athletic tops and shorts + sunscreen (lots of it).  I keep a hoodie available for when the wind picks up, not as big an issue on lakes.

Thanks - that's what I thought - water + air temps should be such that I could swim all day in the water in shorts alone and only have to worry about sunburn.  I figure a swim shorts + riptide surfing shirt or some such thing + hat and shades + tons of sunblock should be the ticket.  Maybe a 3mm-5mm farmer johns for winter lake or bigger lakes.

Some guys here makes fun of me being so wrap up even in the summer. I use
clothing that has UPF rating on them. Better safe than sorry being that we spend
a lot of time on the water.

I assume you mean Ultraviolet protection factor in the clothing.  Well, you won't be alone, I have a white surf shirt that is built for surfing that is also UVF 50 protecting.  I would like some other clothes in the same style - I don't burn well - born and raised in Ireland - even 30 mins in a strong sun will mess me up.

since getting sunburned badly several times even after using messy sunblock I bought some sunblock pants that convert into shorts, they have zippers down the leg sides so I can get them off without having to take off my boots.  I also bought long sleeve shirts and the shirts and pants are UPF+ 50.  they are a light weight so they don't get too hot in the summer.  they are too clammy and cold to wear in cold weather though.  I got the pants and shirts from REI, not cheap............

All I  can say is Cabales Bargain Cave, you may not be a fashion model and match but you'll be covered in protective coating and not so much greasy sun screen lotion

Slather on the sunscreen and wear shorts in the summer.  Paddling 1/2 a mile out on Tahoe, stripping off the shirt and hat and stowing the shades, then plopping over the side of the yak into the Blue Abyss...  That's all worth any amount of greasy sunscreen in my book.   :smt001

I have a number of "Fishing shirts" (Sorry don't remember the brands at the moment) there made of light weight relly breathable material and when wet, they dry off real quick.  You see this style of shirts on all the pro's on TV.  Vented can roll the sleeve up yada yada.  Last few I gt, I got them at the last Sportsmans expo in San Mateo.
