Can someone give me some advice on what type of paddle jacket , combined with a 3mm farmer john wet suit would be appropriate for fishing on an SOT in N. CA waters? Is this a good safe and comfortable option? Thanks for your help on this.

I'll step out on a limb and say that just about any paddle top along with a 3mm Farmer John should work well in 99% of your ocean launches as long as you have practiced self rescue and are out in reasonable conditions.

However, there are those who will take the worst case view and say that anybody who paddles out without a full-on Artic Circle exposure suit is a fool, while others still say they paddle in shorts and a t-shirt all the time.  :smt044

The farmer john and paddle top are what most of us are wearing in the ocean. If you're more concerned or have a tendency to paddle in colder conditions then a dry suit would probably be a good investment. If you're only fishing freshwater near shore then something less than the wetsuit and paddle top are probably fine. "Dress to swim" is something you'll hear a lot, but in some conditions that translates into "dress for heat stroke." It's a balance we all strive for and we make our own decisions about how much risk to take. However, whether it happens in this thread or others, you will encounter zealots that will provide examples of how you "should" dress based on the worst or best case scenarios. Good luck!

BTW, here's the dry top I wear with a farmer john, or with Kokotat paddle pants, depending on the conditions. It's the introductory level paddle top and I hope to upgrade soon. But, I've been wearing a top very similar to this one for ~5 years. If I had the money when I was first buying i would have bought one that seals along the bottom instead of simply having a draw string. Still, it has served me well in a variety of conditions:
