Hey folks, so I go Dungeness crabbing every now and then and was frustrated out of my mind on how to lure these babies into my hoop net. i have an old net my dad used and have had to fix it many times because its dying out. two years ago i set it up as follows and it has not failed since. this is just what i have found after trial and error and lots of frustration with other ways of doing it. of course it aint the only way to get crab. the next easiest thing is to dive for em: O )

- 1 cheapo nylon rope and steel hooped hoop net

- big 5 / sportmart bait cage, replace the rubber pull lock with a brass snap

- use an egg float at the top of the net to keep the rope high when its sitting on the bottom and the crab wont get flicked off when you start your pull.

the recipe for baiting it is:

 - 2 cans of tuna in OIL or Water small cans fit well. poke holes with a knife about 1/4 " top and bottom, 5 on each side.

- min of 3 kingfish, sliced up but not chopped up. make them bleed in 5 or 6 places.

drop your net and leave lots of slack in the line., your float should have no pull on it.

check the trap every 10 minutes, fish for kingfish between pulls so you can toss a fresh one in everyv now and then. after 5 pulls your cage will be packed but leave enough room for the tuna scent to bleed out. youll see a nice slick on the ocean when its working.

i have gotten my limit in as much as quick as 5 pulls with this recipe.

some folks leave their hoops in for a lot longer but from what i have seen and observed freediving the crabs come and eat, they get full and actually leave the bait. with a hoop net you should check more often. with a trap you can just leave it for a while i guess. i have no experience with those things and dont know how they work. i am a simple pirimate and cannot figure those things out.

yesterday on one of my pulls i got 4 nice dungies and one reached through the net and clamped down on my left calf. i now have a nice blood blister where it pinched me. also have some wetsuit parts to repair since it tore a nice hole about the size of a quarter right through my open cell neoprene suit. what a jerk! i ate him first.

when you get home, cook for 25 minutes in salt water at a slow rolling boil and then gorge yourself until your gut expands and then laugh out loud and slam your intestines together. feels real good. YUMMY.!!
