I always kinda feel bad about taking the big eels because they take a long time to grow and produce the most eggs, but then I figure it probably doesn't hurt the population too bad, as there's probably a ton of them that live so far back in holes that no one can even reach them.

Also, they spawn from February-April, depending on where you are. The eels in the Monterey area and south tend to spawn early (late February) as opposed to the ones further north (SF Bay, north/SMC) which tend to spawn in April.

That's another reason I'm hesitant on taking the big ones in the winter. Just like lings, if you take the parent, then the eggs are probably doomed too, unless there's another eel in the hole (which there is, a good number of times).

I also noticed that up on the North Coast, there seems to be an abundance of rock prickleback/eels, which are a little bit better eating than MFE, imo. I'll catch them once in a while down here, but up north I catch them more frequently than monkeyfaces. The meat is a little more flaky I think.
