So today I went out to Tomales Bay and launched at Lawson's Landing. Everything was going great, on the first pulls there were about 3 undersized dungies, so I figured I would leave them in the same spots. I went out for the last time to pull them out and this is where it turned bad. I figured I would go out and get the furthest pot, as i pulled it up, I grabbed the pot to put it in the kayak, I could see there were 2 or 3 legals. As I went to pull it in I saw a big object in the water and as I tried to pull the pot, all of a sudden I felt something hit the box and the kayak and I went over. So the day ended on a sour note. I lost my bag of crab stuff and my gerber knife. So I went home wet, no crabs (seems they came out from one of the doors that were open, all that was left was one that was under size).

The seals like to hang out at the pier when I have crabbed from there, I have seen them play with the boxes when they go in and come out from the pier. I am guessing one was thinking he could grab some of the bait from the box and hit me instead into the water.

Oh it was a scare, I kept telling myself it was a seal so that I wouldn't freak.

If the furbags were all all around playing in the water....that's what it probably was. If they were hauled out and looking nervous, it might have been something else. Either way, unnerving to say the least.

Sorry to hear about your mishap and some of your lost gear. I'm just glad that you're ok :D I think we can all agree that we'd rather lose some gear rather than lose a limb.
