My son's rod/reel is at the bottom of Contra Loma reservoir, and I need to get him a rod/reel setup for trout.

What is the best rod/reel that I can get him for around $60-70 ?

YOUR RECOMMENDATION IS APPRECIATED.

He will be yakfishing on a 10' yak, fishing for trout/crappie

The local walmart have the 5 to 6' ugly stick light rod .  get the lightest one available with a 6' test line and the smallest spinning reel.  I was there yesterday and they have a nice reel for $18.
even when he hooks a crappie it will give him a nice fight.  The ugly stik is selling for 29....then when and if it gets donated to the lake it won't hurt as much. :smt003

Or better yet, a rod float so there isn't anything to get tangled in should he go overboard.

Thx all for the recommendation. I plan on buying a rod float, which i had planned on doing after seeing a post not too long ago.  Hope to have my son on some fish during his Spring break!

Peace, y'all

Daiwa Exceler is a good little reel for its price point, smooth drag and overall good handling. Not sure on overall durability but it should be comparable to others in its class, I've had my little Laguna (the excelers predecessor) going on 5 years and its still ticking despite heavy saltwater use. Best $40 bucks I ever spent fishingwise.

Probably better to spend a little more on the reel, and whatever you have left then think on the rod. My 2 cents.

I've been using the same cheap >$20  reels for years. No need for anything fancy since reshwater won't corrode  them like saltwater will.

I've seen too many big fish lost and fishing days spoiled by cheap reels cheap rods OK but reels I thinks $50 is the cheapest I would even think about Kids are tough on gear, maybe a little cheaper if it's a spincaster.

What Reel are you fishing that cost less than $20

Shimano sahara spinning reel. Any rod suited to the reel. Cheaper the better.
