I have a brand new revo (only been out a couple of times.) The problem is (I think) is that the rudder does not stay locked in the down position. I'll be peddling along and the yak will start turning hard left. To get the rudder working again I have to pull on the handle that lowers the rudder. And sometimes I have to hold the handle out. Has anybody had this problem and/or know how to fix it?

yeah mine seems to not want to turn one way some of the time. I just throw the rudder hard one way then the other. After that it seems to be fine.

Joe, Are you pulling the down cable out & locking it into the provided cleat? If not then that may be your issue. jim

Check the rudder pin, part # 81394001.  Last summer, I was one mile offshore from MBK and I my Revo was not responding to my steering.  Next thing I notice the whole rudder was flopping around.  I had to paddle back to shore and found out the rudder pin broke.
Its a good thing conditions where good that day.  The rudder pin costs about $3.50.
BTW you pedal your Hobie not peddle (I am sure you are not selling anything) :smt002

Thanks for responding guys. I don't think the rudder is broken. I think Saltydog nailed it. All I was doing was pulling the handle until the rudder came down and then releasing it. I will look for the cleat to attach the handle to.

Pedal, peddle I see my mistake now thanks FishingAddict.

Just to clarify.....you pull about six inches or so of the down rudder cord or until it's tight and then the line is held under tension by wedging it into the cleat. jim

Never heard of or experienced this issue before on an Outback.  Is it specific to the Revo?  Which cleat are you talking about?

Al I think the cleat is only for 2009 and newer hobies.  isn't your OB an 08 or something?

This is the one. I always cleat mine. Without pulling the cord tight thru the cleat there is a lot of slack in the line and the rudder action, to me, feels sloppy and especially when conditions aren't FAC the rudder will get pushed around by wind waves. 2009 & 2011 have it. Don't know about other years. jim

You need to attach the Down Handle with the extra slack to the cleat everytime you pull the rudder down.

I discovered if I do not attach the Down handle to the cleat, extra slack from the spectra would would rap around the bungee shock cord next the spectra inside the hull.  The shock cord controls the rudder steering from left to right.

If the the spectra is rapped around the shock cord both the Up and Down Handles get heavier and sometimes won't work.
Once I started attaching the Down Handle to the cleat when the rudder is down,  I never had any problem bringing the rudder up and down.

This is why Hobie installed a cleat next to the Down handle.  I own an 09 Revo.
