I have a very similar farmer john with the zipper in front and love it! Makes taking a pee OTW nice and easy!!

I combine it with a spray jacket as well, and on windy/cold days have a pair or of dry pants that I put on top for extra warmth...

Ok so I Like the nrs Ones but am curious about how the wet suit extensions work? I was going to order one today if i find the one I like regardless I was going to order the Hydro skin Grizzly john but it only goes to xxl which is sized correctly with wegiht but not the height its like 3 inches to short, But the extensions they sell would make it work does anyone know more about them or companys wich have plus sizes lol for full figured males HAHAHA jk

If you're looking for thermal protection from Nor Cal waters the suit you picked isn't gonna do it.  The Hydroskin material is great stuff, but at .5mm neoprene it offers hardly any real thermal help.

Personally I don't go out on the ocean in anything less than 5 to 7mm, but many here do go for the NRS 3mm suits.

I have a hydroskin shirt that I wear over my 5mm FJ it has great flexibility and pretty good wind protection but I wouldn't want to be immersed in it.

When I very first thought about kayaking on the ocean SIKs (sit-in kayaks) were on the table for consideration. In trying to evaluate the safety of those vs sit-on-tops I did some homework looking for fatalities. As it turned out, people didn't drown in them, they died from hypothermia because they couldn't get back in.

I don't recall who, but someone on this board had something of a near-death experience trying to get to shore, after his kayak sank, wearing farmer johns. It seems like (though I could be mis-remembering) that he was paddling with someone, but they had become separated.

Being the chicken sh_t that I am, those two bits of info caused me to get a full wet suit (and now dry suit) for anything that resembles big water ie, ocean, SF Bay, etc ... We have the luxury of good people to paddle with, but the idea of being as self-sufficient as possible, regardless, is a good one.

Wetsuits are a fine line between comfort and utility.  I have a 7mm full suit (ultraflex), it is a lot of work to paddle with the wetsuit on, but it is warm!  Usually when diving I have the wetsuit down to my waist for the paddle out and zip it up before water entry.

For just fishing I have the NRS Ultra Jon and really like it.  The wetsuit is easy to put on and comfortable!  It has a relief zipper and zippers on the legs to get my hobbit feet through.  The 3mm neoprene is just adequate for a short stint in the water, but definitely not for long term immersion (an hour or slightly more would probably be max).  I use a semi-dry paddle jacket over the top.  I do need to get some rain pants to put over the wetsuit when it is raining.  Wet neoprene is cold!

If I was doing some long distance paddles, or more solo adventures where there is no support system; I would definitely get a dry suit.

Matt
