Radio that is... :smt003

Any other ham geeks? I got into it for when I was fishing by myself in remote river canyons in norcal. Crossband repeat from my HT to the radio in my car in case of emergencies. Started messing with APRS which is pretty cool. My next project is to interface the GPS output from my Humminbird 383C and use APRS through my HT for realtime tracking on the internet. Then when the landlord comes to collect at least someone will know my last known location,  :smt044

Anyone know of any repeaters that hit the SM coast well? I use my HT as my marine radio but haven't played with it much when I've been out there.

And yes, I'm bored at work...

I believe Troy "CGN-38" does it. Unfortunately, he's in Seattle right now for work.

No.... But I may be interested ;)  I was thinking of getting into CB radio for 4wheeling or for emergency use, since im now living in the boonies again.  But I purchased a top of the line CB, and when I received it its so big there is no where to mount it in my 4Runner  :smt012  Thought maybe i'd use it as a home base station or something, so I went to a shop and talked about options, and they told me that CB really wouldn't be as useful as I thought, since the terrain is going to limit my signal greatly.  He then told me I should check into HAM, and that many guys are using them for 4Wheeling as well as many other more interesting uses, like you described.  I'm tempted, but dont know anything about either one really.   What kind of setup do you have?  How hard is it to get the license?

Do you still have to learn Morse code and pass the test before getting into comminicating by voice?

Yup I have my General class and a vanity call (Which I won't put here) PM me if your interested. Hojo, I believe the morse code is not needed now for tech license the licensing has changed so much since I got mine, but I don't think you need to know morse anymore for the lower class licenses. Extra and advanced classes I think you still need to do 10-13 wpm morse.
I do believe that the novice ticket was removed or added to the technician class.  As I remember it, tech+ (which is what I had prior to upgrading to general) gave me voice in UHF,VHF (2M & 440cm) and limited voice on 10m usb (Just above the CB band)
My general class gives me voice on all bands, HF,VHF,UHF,all modes AM, FM, CW.

Al, your CB can be used at the house for a "Base", of course you need to supply it 12VDC and a decent outdoor base antenna. however, as stated earlier, CB won't be very effective depending on your places location.  If your down in a valley (I think creekside pretty much nails it for you) you will be limited on how & where your CB signal will go. Back in 1982 when that big storm hit, most of the phone lines in that area were downed, and HAM & CB became the only means of communication.  Course now, everyone has a cell phone.

Thing about cell phones and disaster areas is cell phone towers use batteries as a back up in case of power outages and they do go dead.  HAM radios, most are mobile and powered by vehicle. There are many people in the San Lorenzo valley that are HAM's. There is a club, SLVRC San Lorenzo Valley Repeater club 147.120 +98pl Their club callsigh is WR6AOK. Depending on the repeater system you might get on, one could talk from Santa Cruz, to Red Bluff,CA. So HAM is a much better option for communication than CB.  Much cleaner to!  For current  information regarding HAM licensing, look at the ARRL website. I think it's ARRL.org? My text window is acting up I need to send this

Group IQ is inversely proportional to the size of the group.
