Apparantly Frogs murder bass!! My gf's dad gave me this old science magazine from 1967 and on the back was this ad for a little plastic frog that literally murders bass.  i thought I would post it since i know some guys here are crazy for flippin the frog.  I haven't tried the frog yet, never been a big topwater guy, but watchin Mooch get on em at del valle got me thinking.  What do yall think about froggin for bass?? Any tips or techniques that i should try??

I got into fly fishing for awhile. My first flyfish ever was a dandy bass on a popper made to look like a frog.

use braided line (I use 20# suffix) .....I learned the hard way :smt013  To this day, I still think about that hog that got away with my frog  :BangHead:

I just think that there's nothing more exciting than seeing a predator ambush it's prey  :smt045

a stiff action 6 1/2 ft or 7 1/2 ft spinning rod..." bass casters" dont always work well with all frog imitations due to weight variations

agree with Mooch, braid, straight to the hook eye but i go with 65lb fireline camo.. lost about $25.00 worth of various frogs before i wised up. another reason line so heavy is i fish them in the heaviest nastiest cover i can.

cast onto the bank or weed bed, then dead stick it for 5 seconds after you drag it off the vegetation. into any clear spots, then a couple twitches. usually a medium speed hop stop twitch hop stop works best.

have fun it's a great way to learn your bass

In my limited experience (I just started froggin this year) I also learned that making a couple casts to a thick weed mat isn't just enough. I must have made over 20 casts at the same spot before that bass finally hit my frog. I had the same experience when I spent an hour fishing a weed mat over by the launch ramp....I was casting and using several different retrieves (and casting from various angles) until I got a few swirls here and there until I finally hooked one.

Like WR - I prefer using a spinning outfit as well.

IMO: this frog made by snag proof has won my confidence :smt002 I personally think that the color of the frog doesn't really matter, IMO, it's the action that you impart on the frog that really attracts 'em. I like using white cause it's more visible for me :smt002

I'm curious to hear how others fish their frogs....hope Juan/ Mako1 chimes in. I know he kill's 'em at clear lake :smt045

A trick that was taught to me was to put a couple of glass beads and small weights inside the frog.
The fish find it easier on thick mats , and it also makes noise.
Remember to practice safe knots, because big fish don't just break your line, they also break your heart.

Frog fishing has a cult following and for that type of frog fishing, they use heavy baitcasting outfits with #65 braided line. Do a search on Dean Rojas, the premier frog bass fisherman. Also Spro and Snagproof have hollow body frogs. It's getting so specialized that they actually make a specific hook to swap out for a better hookup ratio.

There's now even soft bodied frogs by Stanley and Strike King which are getting a good following as well. And I remember the old Mister Twister Hawg Frog.

Tight lines~!

I'm no expert, but I use 50 lb. braid with a medium/heavy extra fast action rod in the delta.  I mostly work the frog in open water tight to heavy cover and tullies.  When I throw frogs onto matted hydrilla and moss, I use heavier stuff: heavy action rod and 65 lb braid.  Best time to frog is in the summer, but some manage to do well all year long.

No Eric, Cant stop wont stop the MBP!!!! Im a fishin fool!!
WR, I frogged up, got a little yellow guy from sumo frog!! Looks cool but got pretty rained out here in oakland and I ended up scoring big WAF points by finishing up some tile work in the bathroom.  Next week for sure, or maybe WSB instead!!!  :smt006

being single, WAF points aren't the issue for me that they are for you, but, yeh you did right.

think of it this way; a completed tile job is worth at least 2 days in pursuit of WSB. common creek bass, those you can get after any time.

don't be surprised if you lose one or two frogs in the course of a weekend. while I've whacked the snot out of the local pond bass up here when i had the chance, it does have it's cost, even using a direct braid to lure connection like i mentioned before.

one last tip: the hardest thing to do is learning to wait at least 2 heartbeats after that fish grabs your frog before setting the hook. remember, a lot of times, they stop to turn it around so they can swallow it, and your hooks are facing the wrong way before that happens.
