So I got my new kayak and have been going out on our lakes here at Ft. Hunter Liggett. I have practiced paddling, self rescue, flip overs and have done a whole bunch of fishing. I am trying to get out for rockfish before the season closes. I have almost all of the gear listed for starting out (still need the radio). I am still very much an amature at this and maybe my request is unreasonable so early on, but I am willing to learn if someone is willing to teach. Looking to go out from MBK.

Thanks for all of the posts, I have learned a lot.

Kevin, welcome to the board as I'm pleased to hear that you got yourself a kayak. Now let the MADNESS begin lol!! :D

Speaking of Hunter Liggett, I used to do lotsa fishing there during my high school summer vacation days (10+ years ago lol!!). Been meaning to go back and rekindle some of those good memories.

Back to the topic, MBK rockfishing ain't the best place, but I feel it's much safer than other areas for RFing. However, yak fishing near the Coast Guard Jetty is a good/safe place to practice. You can catch some nice lings there. But if you are thinking about launching outta MBK, I would rather chase a wsb than RFs while they're still roaming around here.

Thanks for the reply. I don't necessarily need to go out of MBK. I was thinking it would be a good place for my first ocean paddle. I am looking for a good, easy and safe place for my first go around.

thanks

Kevin

Welcome Kevin. Congrats on your new kayak. You'll get tons of excitement from it and from the brotherhood here at NCKA.
Whenabouts are you thinking of going rock fishing?

Jump over the hill to Cambria and launch at Leffingwell Landing (Moonstone Beach).  I may be heading there this weekend if you want to come along.

my schedule is gonna be busy for a bit, we have twins due in december, but it sounds like we live in the same area.  we should get in contact at some point.  I live right near north shore lake san antonio.

Kevin,
I'm trying to put together a group to fish Ft Ross this Wednesday (10/27)  So far, there are three confirmed and at least another two likely.  You're welcome to join us.  We will be launching around 7:00.  Conditions are forecast to be pretty calm.  I have never fished the fort myself, but there will be at least a couple of guys who know the "turf".

You're much more prepared than I was my first time out!

Have fun and be safe!
