Greetings:

Well we just returned from a three week adventure in sunny Baja California.  We spent most of our time at Jenna's parents palapa on Santispac beach; ~10 miles south of Mulege.  The first couple days we worked the islands within Bahia Conception and caught sandbass, baracuda and bonefish.

Frequent afternoon winds limited our fishing, but with a small motor boat we got outside the Bay and caught firecracker yellowtail, green jack and Cabria (leapard grouper).

Next we hit Magdelena Bay the northern tip.  This is absolutely one of the best paddles in Baja.  Fishing the first morning was a bit slow and we had difficulties outfitting everyone... we had six people but only for boats.  So, Levi put Jessica on the front of his scrambler and Jenna sat on the back of the caper with Adam.

This is Jessica's very first fish!  What a place to catch your first fish hey!

In all Jessica caught a broomtail grouper, corvina, leatherjack, and sandbass.

The corvina fishing was wide open in the evening as well as grouper

In all we caught alot of fish the first day in Mag Bay

I got really sunburnt because I forgot to apply sunscreen, so the next morning Levi had to go out by himself.  Man was that a mistake

He found a great grouper hole and caught five grouper.  He lost one that completely broke of the hook on his broke-back rebel and straightend another.

Then we went back to Santispac and tried for yellowtail again, but the fishing turned off.  We did well with trigger and had lots of seviche'.

All in all it was a great trip, the fishing was good.  I am definitly going back this summer for Dorado and Roosterfish.  Your all welcome to join me.

Cheers

Hey Jim welcome back!

Nice fish, but I'm a bit surprised at all the juvenile broomtails you kept.  Ever here of catch and release?  Those poor little things never even left their nursery habitat.  I know from experience that there are plenty of nice tasty adult spotted sandbass and corvina in there, so you had no excuse that you were only keeping them all to eat because you were in some sort of "survival mode".

Okay, maybe I'm just jealous I didn't get to go this time.  But seriously, let a few go next time.

Cool deal Jim!!!  You're getting me excited as I have a trip down to the East Cape and CSL in early May!  Imagine that ... Baja and Ketchikan in the same year.  I'll be hitting you up on PM for more stories and advice.

His grouper looks like it's about 30 pounds.  Sound about right Jim?  :smt002

Looks like Jessica is a quick study on the Fishsniffer pose as well.

Yah, Levi has the fishsniffer pose down pat.  That fish wasn't more than 8lbs.  So should we have a special class for largest fish from two people on a single person kayak.  That was crazy!

Beautiful looking conditions.  I can't wait to hit the warm waters and weird fish of Mexico.

Congrats on those fish and great pics!!!

2 people fishing from a Caper? Dang that is nice water to be able to do that.
Could you imagine trying that along the Sonoma Coast?

Looks like a wonderful way to start the year.  The image of doubling up in a caper is interesting........????????

Funny thing I forgot to add.

I showed these picts to my 4 yr old daughter.  She looked at the trigger fish and said "That looks just like Dorey"  (From Finding Nemo), except its brown.  I thought about it, and she's right.  It does have the same shape.

I just told her that Team Bodega ate Dory's uncle.  Not to worry, Dory is still out there with Marlin and Nemo.

My wife and I made that drive 10 years ago and camped on a beach that couldn't have been far from where you were near Mulege.  Took us 3 days to get down there but well worth it.  I wasn't much of a fisherman then but we did kayak the bay!  What kind of gear/bait/lures were you using?
