Tote,
I belong to 2 norcal spearfishing clubs and I can tell you that the vast majority of freediving spearos use foot pocket fins with no straps and for a good reason. You need to keep a streamlined profile underwater. As for the ducktape solution, if you tape the straps up what is the use of adjustable straps then. Full foot pockets are harder to put on but with a little practice, you really get good at it. A few years ago, I had blades with adjustable straps and one of my fins buckles/straps got caught in a strand of kelp 20' down as I just had speared a ling, I was going back up, No big deal, I have years of experience iin diving (PADI divemaster). I untangled myself as my lungs were started to hurt, and got back to the surface without any problem. I dive in kelp all the time and kelp does not bother me at all at any depth. I am just thinking of people who might not have as much experience and who might panic in such a situation. I am just telling it like it is: Full foot pocket blades are a better choice for freediving and as for walking on rocks, we all use rock hopper slip-ons (1 size bigger) which we put on our socks after we are done diving.

I got tangled in kelp 2 years ago in La Jolla. Shallow water, I was only a few feet from the surface, but I wasn't going anywhere. (Legs wrapped). Anything you can do or avoid doing/having on you to avoid entanglement is highly advisable.
And yes, I did panic. Kicked and thrashed like crazy and luckily, broke free. Wrong way to do it.
