Im wanting to put one of the multi-adjust style, like a Scotty, rod holder in the front of the yak where it can be quickly reached, watched, etc. Ive been told to put it in the center and out of the way of the arc of the paddle and to not block the area for a FF. Anything else to consider?

choose the spot carefully! paddle stroke for sure. Also make sure you can swing your leg over it and that it doesn't block access to FF or any front hatches. I suggest the further fwd the better. if you have to lean fwd thats OK. the cockpit are should be un cluttered. Think of that thing being there when (not if) you roll the boat. major tangle in the works.

Im no expert, but good point EWB..Thats what has scared me away from anything other then the flush mounts.

I started diving a few weeks back, the 2nd dive was from the yak, spent a lot of time climbing in and out of the yak on the water. Im tall, and cant imagine trying to get back in the boat with a rod holder in the way... It would be twice as hard if it was really swelly or choppy.. EWB, do you find it easy to get back in your boat with the placement you have?

Good advice Eric.

Hi Yakers:

I cross my Legs and use my Crotch as a Rod Holder. I feel
every little Bite with the Rod between my Legs.  :smt005 I only use Rod
holders in the rear of the Yak for Temp. storage.

Honestly I use that front rod holder about 20% of the time. On both my boats I have the ram mount so I can fold it down. I pretty much use it to hold the rod when rigging and landing a fish (removing hook) or if I happen to be fishing two rods. If I have one then I just hold in my lap and balance the tip on the hobie drive or the sonar shield.

OK Drifter, has a storage hole cut and I FF hole cut ith a cover over the hole when I got it used. Has two flush mounts behind the seat, but I have shoulder issues and bad back that makes it tuff for me to twist around without shifting in the seat. So that is why I was thinking of one holder in front. I do see the problem for getting in n out with leg swing now too. I was planning on the use to be for rigging, getting fish off hook n such, not for constant rod holder while I just sit back n relax.

you may want to look at the ram mounts. They can move out of the way with a push of your foot or hand

I have a rod holder up front but hardly use it. I find myself doing this instead -

...just my 2 cents

* easy reach yet out of the paddle stroke
* you can "feel" the bite
