Cut Plug Herring for Salmon

I'm new to kayak fishing but not to fishing. I have been Salmon fishing Shelter Cove for almost thirty years. My favorite method is either to slow troll or mooch cut plug herring. I have found very few people fish cut plug herring this far south. It seems to be very popular farther north in Oregon and Washington. The nice thing about this method is that it is the same set up rather your trolling or mooching. I use 45lb braided main line tied to a swivel. The reason I use this heavy a main line is I also use this rod /reel for bottom fishing. The reel is a Shamano Charter Special. It has a really smooth lever drag. A lever drag is a must for mooching in my estimation. I use a banana weight of 2 to 8 oz. depending on the depth I want to fish.I use 25lb Fluorocarbon leader material with two fixed # 4/0 hooks.The rod is a Shamano Compre 7ft rated 15 to 30lbs. This rod is popular with Pike fisherman. It is not your typical mooching rod but I really like it. If I find bait I will mooch on the out side of the bait ball. The beauty of using a kayak is that I can just pedal forward slowly (I love my Hobie Outback) As I slowly move forward the bait rises in the water column then falls as I stop.The rising and falling action of the bait triggers strikes. I have found that his method often produces fish consistently when others won't. It also seems to produce larger fish.
