so i was out throwing a frog today at a local lake for spots, i didnt get to many takers but the ones that did blow up i missed do to heavy vegetation and my lack of skill, so my questions are;

1. after you miss a blow up, do you throw back to the same spot or is the fish gone?(threw back but did not get another strike)
2. what is the preferred leader to frog knot?(frog kept coming back on the retrieve upside down, used an improved clinch)
3. better to throw into heavy vegetation or dead leaf mats(did both but got the strikes in the dead leaf more than heavy)
4. do you pause the retrieve for a 1, 2, or 3 count(tried all)
5. what position should you have your rod in( had mine in a 10:30 to 12 oclock position)
6. is a medium action rod to light

thanks for your input, cameron

Cameron, my 2 cents on froggin'.
Yeah, if you miss one, and don't sting him, throw back in there again!
I use straight dark #50 braid to my frog, an improved clinch knot has never failed. I don't even cut off the tag end.
I throw it anywhere you can picture a bass being in. Think frog.
It's not rocket science. That's why I love it. I get to cast a lot, with a rig I like to cast, and really cover water. I pause now and then, sometimes they blow up on it while it's just sitting there, but I mostly scoot it along, thinking frog.
I try to keep my rod almost pointed at the frog so I can get a long sweep on the hookset. When they hit it is easy to react too quick, and you end up pulling the frog away from them, even then, throw back to them. I set up like a B.A.S.S. pro. If you end up with bruises on your gut, you are doing it right. Then, reel, reel, reel!
I like a conventional setup, light, so I can cast it all day, and fairly stiff. A magnesium, low-profile Chronarch on a 6'6" med-heavy, fast action Loomis. I love this rig,, I love casting it. My backup is a similar spinning stick.
Let's hit Rodman before the Summer's over.
If you don't know where you're headed, any road could get you there.

yeah cam, you should go out with juan, he's the man to show you the ropes!  hobieblue would probably be the other frog expert here.

i throw a frog for maybe half an hour a day, and just get so frustrated i give up.  its exciting but ridiculously frustrating when you can't get that hookup.  when i fished kelsey earlier this year, i threw a similar topwater like a frog, and those bass would blast the thing about 3-4 feet into the air, but never sucked it down.  one of the problems is that if you're on top of lilies, they may hit it from underneath the lily pad and have a low chance of grabbing it.  you will have more luck if they hit it in pockets of open water between the vegetation.

the main thing with fishing topwater is don't set that hook right away!  you'll likely pull it right out of their mouths.  you should give at least a tick or two to make sure the frog is in there.  you should feel tension on the line.

its probably the most exciting type of bass fishing out there for sure, though i prefer throwing weightless flukes since i get a better hookup ratio.

I agree with everything juan said in his post except that i use the palomar over the clinch and i use 35lb braid because i don't cast 50 well.  i haven't had any problems with the palomar slipping while throwing braid, and haven't experienced frogs flipping upside down.  i don't think that's really a knot problem though, probably more related to the way that the frog is being worked or the design of the frog.  practice makes perfect!

good luck cam! i'm sure you'll have a blast.
