just watched some show on the tube and the worms survived the lemon juice just fine.  The only thing that worked was cooking at high heat and freezing sub zero.

Did they mention how worms fare against teeth, and human digestive enzymes?

no, they just bought some fish at the dock, then looked for affected meat.  They then did a low heat cook, high heat cook, raw, and lemon juice treatment.  Went back after to see if they were alive.

I could have sworn I read that something like 99.9% of our familiar rockfish worms don't live thru the digestive tract, but can't find that reference now.

I hear ya, Sean.

But they would also have to make it past the cleaning stage, the past my teeth before entering the killing fields of my digestive tract...  odds are looking slimmer and slimmer of contracting one of these parasites....  from the very rare serving of fresh ceviche...  odd are more like 1 in a million I bet.

Of the 3 types of worms, relevant are the cod worm and seal worm. Neither is able to survive in our digestive systems.  Tapeworms, however, not only survive but thrive (grow)- but you won't find them in our fish.

I like Eric B's advice- Be Careful, or something to that effect.

That shit will live in your gut. It will give you severe diarrhea. Lime or lemon Juice will not kill it. Freezing it will. End of story.

Having said that. I made a batch of halibut ceviche the other day. I sliced the meat thin so i could see into it. I didn't see any worms and I didn't get sick. Neither did any one else. When I think about it though i should probably have froze it for a day first.

We used to call Stillwater So. "scumwater" because of the worms in the fish there. I haven't seen any worms there lately and I don't eat any fish from there without checking them really good ,and then cook them throughly. I had a diver friend of mine get sick from those fish and had to take lots of pills every day for a while... follow advice from previous threads and be mindful of the information given.
