i dont know this guy but apparently this is how he used to fish back home when he was young. home made spear and just a mask.

i like the tail shot, that had got to be hard and i would venture to guess this man would benefit from a speargun one day.

Hey john, when I was with the boys at Mendo a few weeks ago, I was soooooo tempted to dive in and shoot some carp. THEY WERE ALL OVER THE PLACE in about 5 to 8 FOW!!!!!

Just not sure about the legalities...can carp be shot at any body of water? I know Stevens Creek in Cupertino has lot's of 'em too.....

i think some bodies of water are ok to spear while others are not. i dont know where these photos were taken. this guy is from mexico and that is how they fished in mexico i guess. not bad for an older guy as well eh?

if i knew the guy i'd introduce him to a speargun and see how he does in the ocean. i hope i am still spearing at his age.

Looks like a Hawaiian sling setup.

Cool the dude's keeping it old school.  Not sure on the legalities though...

I am visualizing combining bowfishing with stand up paddling... probably legal anywhere for carp. For WSB in the kelp...maybe not so much, but it's fun to think about. Now that would be a manly sport!
Always willing to join others in the Monterey/Santa Cruz/Half Moon Bay area for a bit of fishing...feel free to contact me.

yes, i like the old style spearing myself, reminds me of my cousins in taiwan who would spear out of keelung harbor when we'd go for a visit. i used to tag along but had to stay in the zodiac for they feared losing me.
