This November I snuck a ride over to Rhode Island and did some party boat fishin'.  The Tautog or "blackfish" is the east coast version of our
sheephead.  The Tautog has different colors, green and black spots, but has the same mouth and teeth, and very dense body like a sheephead.
They use a green rock crab cut down the middle.  You use a typical blood loop leader, and a 6oz. torpedo.  They used a #5 octopus hook on about 10"-12" of leader.  We were fishing 100'-165', they hide out on rock outcroppings.  We hooked up a true cod, about 8lbs., it kind of looked like a lingcod without teeth, and a smaller head.  We hooked up a skate, and some strange looking greenling-like fish.  The ocean was very nice.  I landed a 4 lb. fish, and what a fighter.  The thing looked like 2 lbs. to me, very dense fish.  The Tautog's are supposedly some of the best eating fish on that stretch of coast, I will back that up, I brought some back to Cali. and simmered it in some Cali white wine, mmmmmmmmmmmmm!!!!!!!!
