I've got most of my spearfishing gear ready now, and my dad and I are going camping in Ft. Bragg from June 29-July 11.
We're also going to Salt Point 4th of July weekend.

I don't have a yak, so it would be shore diving. I would be going after abs and spearing the 29th and 30th before the season closes, and spearfishing the rest of the times.
I was curious if anyone will be up there and is able to show me the ropes. If not, I'll probably just go shore-picking.
Thanks!

Rick,

I live in Fort Bragg and I'm always lurking around somewhere.  Send me a PM.  I know some spots.

Rick,

Dave W is "The Man" for FB diving.  In case you are unable to hook up with him, pm me.  I recently dived a spot that I have been driving by for years.  It is public, easy access and it always has divers going in and out.  I figured it had to be picked over.  I was wrong.  The abs aren't big (8"-8.5") but there are easy limits in 10-15 feet.  The person who showed me the spot got an 8.5" rock picking.  I didn't see any rock fish or lings but there are greenling and cabs there.

Have a great trip and good luck,

Doug

When you say rock picking, is that without even going into the water?

Yeah that involves a minus tide where you can get out far enough to find them. My friend's dad used to do it a lot, especially when abs could be taken south of the Golden Gate.

The one time I went shore picking I thought I was going to break my ankle on all the slidy rocks.  Diving is easier IMO.

I have not done any rock picking yet but from what I hear, it sounds like it's a little dangerous then diving.

I think one of the most recent abalone catching victims this year was a shore picker.  They are usually in the surf line and are also usually unequipped to be swimming......they don't use fins.  i think this guy got swept off the rocks and couldn't get back.......that's what I was told anyhow.

I know many ab divers that are pretty old and still kicking.........hey, I'm one of them.
