Just got back from visiting the family in Monterey and had some time to fish the old fishing holes. Here is a couple of pics..

My friend Dom also caught a legal size stripper while perching...

Nice score! Those barely legal stripers are the best eating.

So,  Alex, to what do you attribute the change in success from two weeks ago?  Any theories?
Pat
Saltwater is the cure for everything that ails us,
sweat, tear or the sea.

Hi Pat,

Well, there were a lot of sand crab colonies around the deep holes and not a lot of dead seaweed. The conditions was just right to work the edge of the sandbars where we discovered the fish were feeding and the water wasn't to murky. It took my friend and I about three hrs. to catch our limits. It looks like the big males are starting to move in because all the bardperch we caught were males. The big pregnant mamas should be coming in soon in February.

I'm going to try and fish Manresa again just to see if the bardperch population there is just as good as in the Salinas State Beach area, during this time of year.

Oh, the bait fisherman were doing really good with ghost shrimp over in the deep holes at the Monterey dunes... And have you heard about all the Pacific Mackerel their catching out around the Point. My friend went out last Friday and caught 300lbs on jigs. (he gave me a couple for dinner :smt003)Then on Sunday I went to the wharf to check-out the party boats and all the fishermen and women were loaded up with Mackerel. I was so tempted to launch the Alien Yak out of Pebble beach stillwater but I didn't have my wet suit with me.

Anyways, this weekend I'm going to try Manresa after I drop off my boy in S. F. Let me know if you like to try it out again.

I am new to this type of fish. What it is? How do you catch them?

Nice job Alex. Those perch look real good. I got to try that sometime. I haven't had perch in a while.
