I've got a riffe metal tech gun, and I don't know whether to put a reel on it or use a float line.  If I go with a float line, I've got to go with a breakaway rig (I can't see letting a big flattie drag my speargun through the kelp and rocks until it decides it's done running), but I don't quite understand how to rig that up.  Help me out please.
Also, I'm looking for someone to freedive Santa Cruz with me later this week.  Can't go Wednesday, but I'm free until about noon otherwise.  I'm thinking outside edge of the kelp, from 26th towards Capitola, but I'm open to anything.  Thanks

I know it doesn't help for this week but I am going to be in SC the weekend of July 9th if you want to do some diving then too.  I am interested in seeing how bad the visibility is for you.

You can use a Hawaiian breakwaway with a floatline

Dont let the gun go after you shoot that barndoor, arm through the bands secures the gun,  let the floatline run through your fingers. If the floatline does not run you either missed or you stoned the bugger. Good luck.

if you want to try a spot different than SC and Cap try del monte beach in monterey or lover's 3rd beach.

vis is usually a lot better than SC or cap. and there are halibut as well.

John,

I don't know if you know, but I've heard that the metaltech series spearguns sink even without shaft.  So after you shoot a fish, make sure you have the gun accounted for somehow.

I also have a Riffe Metal Tech mid handle 3 band 32" stock speargun with a reel which I use for halibut, and I am very pleased with this set-up.  I could also attach a floatline to the but of the gun, but I usually don't.

Thanks, I think I'm going to go with a reel.  Didn't make it out this weekend, but if anyone wants to freedive Santa Cruz or Monterey, hit me up.
