I've seen Hookups in that area (SWS, Monterey) since the opener on May 1st.  I"m sure you'll see a lot of hookups after this week as well.  FishMaster is in Salinas, and Sin Coast, Big Jim, Allen, Stogie and a host of other locals there.  sorry if I left out other locals...

I'd suggest fresh water for a first time out, but that is just me.

Fresh water first. practice self rescue IE: jump off and get back on. Practice  shifting positions and sitting sideways and choosing best rod positions. Dial in your fishfinder if you have one.
For Saltwater - Stillwater at Pebble Beach - MBK is easy but the fishing is not very good. Capitola is another easy launch. fishing is hit or miss

When you hit the ocean don't forget, wet or dry suit, marine radio an other signaling gear. But MOST important check weather an sea conditions before you launch. Know whats coming then and later in the day. Hope you catch a big one.

Paddle out from MBK towards the Cannery row/Aquarium area.  fish just outside the kelpbeds there.  you will catch fish.  Watch out for the reserve are in front the Aquarium.

have safe and be fun

Don't forget SC and HMB harbor!  Any harbor launch is going to be easier than a beach!

MBK was a good spot for me to learn , have a farmer john wetsuit and just paddle around there learning your kayaks limits , jump off and practice self rescue near the beach, just gradually work your way up to more challaging stuff.

It  looks like you live in salinas . Still water cove would also be a good place to go and you have a good chance to get some keeper fish and that would be great for a first time out in the ocean. Absolutley easy landing and launching

thank you for all of the responses, it has been quite helpful.  I hope to follow someone out to SWC one of these days and learn even more as i am a typical male-i am a visula person- need to go out and watch and learn the ways to the cove ect.  Hopefully i will begin to bring input as well.  Hope to fish and meet some of you great yakers.
